To those who say paleo (or any particular way of eating) is “bad for the environment” (the supposed latest critique from the mainstream media):
I’m finding I’m just too tired to get nit-picky over what are overwhelming highly-generalized and totally-missing-the-point arguments. I find us, in the paleo community, repeating ourselves a lot, and people STILL not getting it.
So here’s my new stance:
Hey guess what? At 7 billion people and counting, HUMANITY is not good for the environment.
EATING is not good for the environment.
Soooo, what we do we, then?
You can do what feels right to YOU. If you do that, and feel ok about it, and realize there’s no SINGLE RIGHT WAY for people to live, and that we all come to our own decisions and have our own rationales—well, then you can ignore the naysayers in peace and let them fight amongst themselves. They will always be looking for that ONE RIGHT WAY.
Me, I don’t think that exists. I think that’s the point. The earth needs DIVERSITY—a diversity of life (not just human mass), a diversity of ways of living. Civilization and its drones have been doing much the same thing for a long time. I think THAT’s a problem!!
Consider this: It is a HUGE privilege for us to even be considering this-to make choices about food based on what we think is right, or what we feel like having tonight, or whatever. Privilege to consider, however, does not necessarily translate to a privilege of real truth, of control, or of foresight.
As much as we’d like to think we know what’s “right”—we don’t always. As much as we’d like to control our diet and even our choices about it-we can’t always.
And above all else—for me anyway—we lack the ability to predict the future: the future of those choices, of our actions, and most especially, of the actions of others.
